The Austrian Academy of Sciences has a long history. Gottfried Leibniz proposed to create it in 1713. Based on his ideas, the Imperial Academy of Sciences was opened in Vienna in 1847. In 1918 it was renamed the Academy of Sciences, and in 1947 – the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Since the mid-1960s, it has become the leading research institution in Austria and Europe in the field of non-university basic research. It includes the Konrad Lorenz Institute of Ethology, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), other research centers and institutions in Austria.

Election of the rector of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute to the world-famous scientific organization will enable faster integration of Ukrainian scientific schools into the European scientific and educational space, deeper cooperation and trust between Ukraine and Austria.
